Henry
In 2011, this little guy strolled into our world, his gait marked by a noticeable limp. We saw this 8 week old pup, tough as nails, making the rounds in our neighborhood, going from door to door, and being chased off each time. But when a curmudgeon down the street thought it was a good idea to give the pup a kick, we immediately interfered. We brought him into our home, and called it a “temporary” arrangement.
We had our questions about where this dude hailed from and why he was limping, but fate had its own plans. It only took a few short hours for that so-called “temporary” deal to turn permanent. By the next day, the pup earned his name – Henry.
The first trip we took him on was to the vet, getting his vaccinations out of the way, and letting the vet take a look at that limp. The vet’s words came as no shock. Henry had an injury where his femur met his hip, and though it was no sure thing, the vet couldn’t rule out rough treatment in his past.
From that moment on, Henry’s world changed. The uncertainty and fear that marked his past began to fade. He didn’t just find a home; he found a pack, a family that embraced him with unconditional love and open arms from the get-go. Henry’s journey might have kicked off with a limp and a hard-knock life, but he’d finally found his place, and his tale will forever be intertwined with ours.
Cora
Meet Cora. Born ion 2021, the turbocharged bundle of fur and energy that’s ready to take life by storm! This jet-black dynamo, adopted from the parents of an HVAC tech, has enough gusto to power a rocket ship. She may be the tiniest of the seven chiweenie-corgi litter of puppies, but don’t let her size fool you – she’s the undisputed champion of the energy game.
Cora’s love knows no bounds, but her enthusiasm sometimes gets the best of her. Instead of delicate kisses, she might opt for an overexcited nibble, all in the name of boundless affection. Walking? Not her style. Cora’s in a perpetual sprint, making “running late” her middle name. When she’s on the move, it’s a full-speed gallop, no exceptions!
At the office of ASC Heating & Air, Cora finds her partner in crime in the form of her littermate, Birdie. These two pint-sized powerhouses engage in spirited games, growling and arguing like seasoned pros, all for the sake of a treat or the coveted spot on the bed. When Cora’s around, you can bet the energy levels are off the charts, and her zest for life is truly infectious. She’s a whirlwind of excitement, and you can’t help but be swept up in her high-octane adventures!
Birdie
In 2021, a sweet little girl joined the family. Our friends, who happened to have a female dog with a new litter of pups, offered her and her siblings up for adoption. Among the seven chiweenie-corgi puppies, she was the cherry on top – the very last to make her grand entrance into this world. On an off note, she was biggest of the bunch and the sole blonde in the litter. But her real charm was her easygoing personality compared to her littermates and siblings.
When we scooped her up to bring her to her new home, we couldn’t help but notice a hint of bittersweet in our friends’ eyes. They cuddled with her one last time, whispering their goodbyes. With her new family, she received a new name; she was now Birdie, a name as sweet as honey. And from that day forward, she’s been a wellspring of love and happiness.
Well, there’s one thing about Birdie – she’s not just a regular cuddler. Nope, she takes it up a notch! She’s all about love, and she’ll make sure your face gets a proper wash, complete with attempts to clean your teeth, gums, and even your tonsils! But as long as we keep our faces away from hers, she’s an adorable little cuddle bug.
As Birdie has grown, her smooth, blonde coat has gone through quite the transformation. The fur on her back adopted a rougher, shaggier texture, while the fur on her feet, legs, and muzzle decided to grow in various charming directions. So, from a smooth-coated puppy, she’s blossomed into a fuzzy, shaggy-coated adult, though we still can’t help but refer to her as our precious baby.
Olive
This pup’s exciting journey began before she was ever rescued from a SNIPSA (Spay Neuter Inject Project of San Antonio) event in the Tex-Mex haven known as San Antonio. The poignant tale of her and her siblings was a true testament to resilience. They were discovered as fragile newborns, abandoned in an alley, in the heart of San Antonio, with no mother in sight. Olive’s story took a twist when she found herself under the temporary care of a foster family. Due to her being the runt of the litter, she needed a little more time and attention before going home with her permanent family. When the day came though, she was picked her up from her doting foster home as they sadly said their farewells to the beautiful little puppy.
As a pint-sized pup, she was a vision of an infectious, radiant charm, signaling, “I’m a cutie pie!” with every wag of her tail. Her ultra sweet nature has remained unchanged through the years. Olive has an unquenchable thirst for connection, craving almost constant companionship. If her demands aren’t met, she’ll strategically position herself to oversee everyone’s movements, ensuring she never misses a moment of action involving other dogs or humans.
Her heart brims with joy when she is unleashed in vast, untamed landscapes. Whether it’s sprawling woodlands or the rocky depths of dried creek beds, Olive revels in the freedom to sprint, her legs a blur as she races as fast and far as her spirit can carry her. She is the embodiment of adventure, the kind of dog who materializes at your side after a midday nap, ready to cuddle up and join your journey, wherever it led.
But Olive’s escapades aren’t complete without her faithful companions. She loves to tussle and frolic with her brother, Henry, and her sister, Birdie. Together, they share the bustling office of ASC Heating & Air, turning every weekday into an exciting escapade in the world of business and play. Olive’s life remains an ongoing adventure, one filled with love, loyalty, and the thrill of every moment.
Toby: 2001 – 2012
This Jack Russell Terrier’s life makes a remarkable tale. Toby’s journey began when his adopted mother arrived at the breeder’s location. From the moment he set eyes on his her, it was clear he was destined to make a big impact. With unmatched enthusiasm, he charged toward her, leaving his littermates tumbling in his wake, and thus, several lives were forever changed.
Little did Toby’s new mom realize that she had welcomed a tiny, yet fiercely determined pup into her life. Toby was an alpha through and through, asserting his dominance in every situation and with almost every dog he encountered. His first conquest was claiming the house, marking his territory with unwavering determination, even if it meant marking everything in sight. As a spotted Jack Russell, a rarity in itself, he occasionally was mistaken for a Dalmatian in his puppy days.
His closest companion in those early years was a female Pit Bull, and the two of them engaged in relentless wrestling matches. No matter how many times Toby was wrestled down, he’d bounce back up, eager for more. Toby’s attraction to bigger dogs was undeniable, and he’d go out of his way to greet them, seeking new playmates to engage in spirited wrestling, just as he had with his sister.
Yet, Toby had his grumpy moments, particularly when someone disrupted his beauty sleep. You could hear his growls echoing down the hallway as he trotted off in annoyance. But life had more challenges in store for him. An unexpected decline in his eyesight prompted a visit to the vet, leading to a three-month journey of trials and tests that revealed Toby had diabetes. Though his life was shortened by this condition, his indomitable spirit remained unbroken.
Even when blindness set in and he required daily insulin shots, Toby refused to let go of his zest for life. He continued playing tug-of-war in the backyard with his canine companions, his mental map of the yard etched into memory as he diligently patrolled his security route multiple times each day to ensure everyone in the house was safe.
When the time came for Toby to step back from the games and lose interest in the outdoors, his family knew it was time to say their farewells. Learning that his kidneys had failed, a common side effect of diabetes, they took him on one final journey to the vet’s office, where they bid farewell to their beloved boy. Toby’s story is a testament to his unwavering spirit and the enduring bond between him and his loving family.
Sammy Higgins
Sammy Higgins got his name from the movie Smother, where the main character has a pack of wild dogs, all named Sammy Higgins. True to the spirit of that quirky name, Sammy entered our lives in 2008, already 2 years old and full of nervous energy. He was just known as Sam at that point, but his namesake changed immediately after seeing the movie come out. His enthusiasm for life was boundless, but he often had trouble controlling it. His eagerness to show affection would result in playful nips, and if he got excited, which was often, he’d bark uncontrollably, unable to hold back his excitement.
To help manage his endless energy, we took him on long walks—usually about two miles each day. These walks gave us a few peaceful hours with a calmer, more relaxed Sammy. Toby, our original Jack Russell, was always there to help keep Sammy grounded. Toby would wrestle with him, offer some discipline, and gently guide him, helping to steer his wild energy in the right direction.
Sammy was a handful, there’s no doubt about it. But, beneath his rambunctious nature, he craved love and comfort. He was a snuggler at heart, though sometimes, his excitement would get the better of him, and he’d be so overstimulated he’d have an accident. Over time, the name “Sammy Higgins” became more and more fitting. His antics were truly a sight to behold, and his boundless Jack Russell energy made him stand out in every room.
He had a knack for finding trouble, too—often escaping the house and running off as fast as he could. We’d frantically search the neighborhood, only to return an hour later to find him sitting in the garage, content after wearing himself out. There was even a time when his excitement for a treat was so intense that, in his joy, he jumped so high he broke his own leg. For weeks, Sammy wore a cast, but that didn’t slow him down for long.
Through it all, Sammy Higgins was a beloved member of our family. He may have been a challenge, but he was ours, and we wouldn’t have had him any other way. Since our last visit to the vet in 2018, when we had to say our final goodbyes, he has left a hole in our hearts. Sammy will forever be remembered, and sorely missed. Rest in peace, Sammy Higgins. You were one-of-a-kind.
